Wyoming Writer Dainis Hazners

This is an excerpt from Dainis Hazners’ incredible book (some of) The Adventures of Carlyle, My Imaginary Friend. 2004, University of Iowa Press.

Carlyle’s in the atttic.
He’s closed the door
and nailed it shut.
Evenso, he sings
O-O-O
holding his face.

He’s chinked
all the cracks -
not even a wish
could find its way

out. In the corner
standing in shadow
is somebody known
and not. Luckily,

Carlyle is with the lunatic
(first they become
smoke, then mingle)

who believes
in continuous love
for all things.
